So then… how do you train “come here” under those circumstances It depends. If you have access to a dog park, go to the dog park at hours unlikely to have a lot of other dogs, such as weekdays in the middle or early morning, or Sunday mornings and practice then. Once you feel like your dog has got it pretty decently, then you can practice the command with other dogs around, which is preferred. The goal is for the dog to stop doing anything their doing to come straight back to you. Another tip is use the dog’s name somewhere in the command, because another goal would be to get multiple dogs to come when you say their specific name and not to other dog’s names. For instance, my full command is “Puppy. Come.” Or “Titus. Come.” Or “Puppy. Titus.
Come.” I say their name first, then I pause and wait for them to look up and give me their attention, and then I give the second half. That’s the way I do them all, actually.
If you don’t have a dog park, don’t fret! This can be done in a fenced backyard all the same. And still don’t fret if you are an apartment liver like me. You can go to any type of hunting-dog store (more likely online) and purchase a 60 ft leash and use that. That gives the dog an ungodly amount of length to run around with and you can even drop the leash and follow after your dog – there’s enough room for that. This method can be done anywhere, parks, right outside, etc. Then do the same thing as I described earlier.
This type of training needs to be done with dogs separate at first. They need to have their separate time to learn the specific command because you don’t want one dog just relying on the smarter dog to know the command. If this happens, then the follower-dog will never know the command on his own.
By the way, don’t forget to give the dog a treat when they come back – and you have to make it a really good one, too, something they never get unless they come back. Something like pepperonis.
