Top 7 hunting dogs

When using the expression, hunting dog we refer to all dogs who assist people in carrying out this activity. Hunting represents a complex process with many aspects and dogs assigned to it fall into certain categories, depending on the skills and developed them (they were crossed, selected and nominated as a race).

The prevalence hounds are those dealing with birds and small game, leaving the hunter killing the account (in English they are called gun dogs). Some hunters killing in mind let butchers, where hunters buy captures end to not embarrass the family before, but already thats another story.

Birds and dogs have won according to the name of hunting of dealing. Pointer breed and show them discover nests, adopting a position more than expressive. Setter breed and raise a birds nest discovered the gun. Cocker Spaniel breed and raise a bird and small game. Retriever brings hunting where the hunter fell at his feet. Water dogs (poodle) deal with birds hanging in the pool and serve as retrievers.

Terriers are probably the most incredible dogs. Trained hard, stubborn, incredibly strong and quick, affectionate and blackmailer are used almost exclusively to hunt mammals. Foxes, raccoons or other similar pests are favorite targets of the terriers, but if you are headed in the pack can go and hunt wild boar, deer and wolves.

But over breed predilection specialized on a distinct set of activities from hunting, there is an exclusive group, which, with a certain loosely, we can unite under the banner, The Magnificent Seven , so called HPR Dogs. Initials comprising three distinct stages of hunting: H - Hunt, P - Point R - Retrieve. Are, if you will, those Premier League players who can play any position. They are able to track down, tracking and hunting haituiasca, mark it and recover from where it was killed. Do not give back any wounded from fighting with hunting, and not talking here only of birds but also of large mammals. Some hunters think weak of heart and even to learn to shoot rifle ...

A Day In The Life Of A Puppy

Leo is growing very fast it seems that he grows by the minute, he is having lots of fun playing with his new found human friends, running, jumping and “galumphing” when he gets it slightly wrong!

He just runs and plays with his toys all day and has very, very few accidents indoors and his new family know that by following the potty training guide and getting him to relieve himself outside as much as possible, he keeps his crate and his new home dry and clean. Phew!

He simply loves his new crate and whenever he can he gets back into it he does and sometimes he simply crashes as if the world has just stopped, resting happily and peacefully with little yelps as he dreams away – this IS the life!

Andrew Serocki stopped the attack
The recent attack by two pit bulls on a woman walking down the street in Sterling Heights will show just what can be accomplished by a dangerous dog ordinance.
Sterling Heights city council enacted a non-breed specific dangerous dog ordinance last year. A city official told The Macomb Daily that this will be the first time the city has had to enforce its dangerous dog law to its fullest extent.
The owners may face still fines and even jail time.
Itll be interesting to see what happens in this case.
Neighbors say that the attack was not the first time the dogs have gotten loose.
Whatever the penalties may be — and I do hope theyre harsh — it is my most sincere wish that the couple are banned from owning dogs of any breeds in the future.
Clearly, the ante is upped when you own a pit bull. But the truth is, any dog can be dangerous in the hands of an irresponsible owner and this couple has clearly demonstrated their irresponsibility.
There are no valid excuses for allowing this to happen.

A Blood Trail Dog Testimonial

I just got a call today from a hunter who shot and lost a 10 point buck and searched on his hands and knees in a cane patch for over 8 hours and then came back the next day with a experienced blood dog and the dog found the deer in a half hour after he started looking.

Most interesting part was after over 24 hours the meat wasnt good, but the very impressive mount was found and salvaged because a day and a half after the shot, the extended time frame didnt diminish the scenting ability of the dog to do its job.

I will get his story in his own words and post that testimonial ASAP.

After we have given up and gone home, thinking there is no way; a dog can come behind us and save the meat and make it a good day.

With a blood dog you will not only save meat, you will save time. We track visually, and it is very time consuming and easy for us to lose a blood trail visually and ultimately, to lose a deer. Even one stuck like a pig and gushing blood, can suddenly stop bleeding or go to water and start to swim and stop the visable blood trailing, making it nearly impossible for us to continue to follow via a blood trail.

But a blood dog is not hurt by a little rain washing away the visual trail or even a deer swimming often doesnt stop a good dog, because a dog is scent trailing not sight trailing.

If you would like to learn more about how I train my Catahoula dogs to trail blood, you can visit my site at:

www.bloodtraildogs.com

or to learn more about the Catahoula breed, you can click the link here to my Catahoula site: www.catahoula.ws.

If you would like to call me, my cell phone is 337 298 2630

If you like what I am writing here, check back, I should have a book published soon.

And next time you or your friends are skinning out a deer, catch some fresh blood in a bucket or tub, and lay out a trail nearby, then see if your family pet is interested in finding out what is at the end of the trail.

You may be surprised to find your family pet is a natural born blood dog.

Crochet yourself a dog or a dog toy

Want a Lab, but without the chewing, barking, eating, pooping, playing, etc. that makes up life with a real dog?
Then crochet yourself one instead!
Just kidding. Whod actually want to give up all that real world dogginess in exchange for a stuffed, lifeless version? Not me.
But Ill probably crochet myself a lab anyway.
The cutest book arrived in the mail earlier this year. Its call Ami Ami Dogs: Seriously Cute Crochet. Its named appropriately. These little stuffed dogs are as cute as they come.
First, I have to say Im amazed I received this book. There is no chance in the world that the PR person responsible for finding places to mail the book to knew Id spent my time off around the holidays learning to crochet.
What great timing.
Anyhow, Im still learning the great art of crochet. So far, I have two scarves under my belt — one that was really more of a practice scarf, and one that I proudly wear around my neck every day now. Even the wearable scarf is far from perfect, though. Ive got a lot of learning to do.
If youre like me, though — a dog lover who knows how to crochet — you have got to get this book. There are step-by-step instructions on how to make 12 different breeds of dogs. The breeds included are: Chihuahua, Welsh Corgi, Shiba, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Miniature Dachshund, Siberian Husky, Labrador Retriever, Maltese, Miniature Schnauzer, French Bulldog, Beagle and Pug.
They seem like pretty small little stuffed figures — each dog is between one and three inches long depending on the thickness of the yarn — which just enhances the adorable factor, if you ask me.
I was thinking about what Id do with them once I finally get the nerve up to try a pattern. Dog toy? Nah. Too cute and too small for that. Key chain? Got enough of those. Knick-knack? I dont like clutter.
Christmas ornament! Cha-cheeng! I already have a small set of plush dog ornaments that I love. Now, I can crochet myself some more to join the pack.
And depending on how good I get at making these precious pooches, some friends and relatives may wind up with crocheted dogs as Christmas presents too.

Training A Blood Trail Dog just do it!

If you buy a dog or puppy from me I am available for consultation for the life of the dog. You are not on your own.

Training a bloodtrail dog is easy, but the real challenge is training the hunter who thinks it is hard to find a lost deer, and assumes the same applies for a dog. It may be hard for us, but for a dog, it is a simple walk in the park. Problem is we dont know what the dog is doing most of the time and we want him to do what we think he needs to do and wont let him work it out on his own.

We see the world, but for a dog, they smell the world and if you allow them to be free in that respect, you will be amazed as I often am.

Here are some threads I copied and pasted in here and my review of their post.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What kind of dog you got?...hounds and labs are the best for deer tracking imo. It just takes time & effort but its not hard to do.
1st you got to have some sort of blood to lay out a trail..check with slaughter house for that.
you lay out easy & obvious trails and work dog with a leash...go from easy, hot trails to working into faint colder trails as he gains experience...you help keep him in line in the beginning but make it fun and exciting for him...always reward him and brag on him when he finishes each trail.
during hunting season you will switch to deer blood...hopefully you have some buddies that will also let you help them track their deer..just to give the dog plenty of experience.
once this dog gets to tracking deer, hell know thats his job...

My review: the most important thing here is repetition and a relationship with the dog. As the writer pointed out, any kind of blood, then repetition, and make it fun and rewarding. and very important come deer season, go onto every kill site you can even if the deer is already found.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cant disagree with JB, but what I have learned to do is to lay a trail of beef fat (by dragging a piece of fat cut from a steak) across a lawn with a bend in the trail and then hide the dogs supper bowl out of sight at the end of the trail. Take the dog to the start of the trail and let him smell what you dragged for the trail on your hand as you move your hand to the start of the trail and say find it or something else of your choice. Make sure that the dog is trailing downwind and after about three nights my labs were trained to put their nose down and trail whenever I just said find it They would trail a wounded pheasant, duck, my daughter or son or whatever had a scent at the spot where I started them. I would just substitute the blood for my fat and give it a try for your plan.

My review: simple, easy, just do it, get a dog and train it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daschunds are great dogs for trailing deer from what I know...I snooped around a bit and found this info...some of you Daschund lovers might enjoy this...imo, any dog that keeps his nose to the ground can be a good tracker... labs stand out a lot in my mind because I had a best friend that had one that would find a deer or just about die trying to! He was an incredible tracker. I have been around hounds most of my younger life and I have seen dogs that would swim a river and stay on a deer trail, but that lab was one in a million!! Anyways heres some more info about the subject of training and the Daschund breed...I think this is a cool thread and very cool subject. Can be a bit controversial but I think it to be a good thing to be able to recover an animal that you might not have gotten without the dogs help...or getting to the animal quicker so the meat dosent spoil or coyotes get to it...lot of pluses...main thing you try not to do is foul up the woods for someone else...or have a dog running to loose out there...

My review: Most people think dogs are as stupid as humans are. Took me years to learn my dogs are smarter than me.

What Is Dog Training For Obedience Purposes?I, like most of us dog owners believe that dog training for obedience is an essential ingredient in any healthy human-dog relationship. But what exactly is dog obedience training, and why is it so important for you and your dog?

Obedience training is a general term which can be achieved through the many various dog training techniques (dog whispering, clicker training, positive reinforcement, marker training, collar and leash, reward training etc.). Regardless of which training technique you choose to employ or which dog training schools you frequent, this is what proper dog obedience training should accomplish:

Build or strengthen a close, healthy and appropriate relationshipbetween you and your dog.

Opens up a clear line of communication between you and your dog. This includes you knowing what to expect of your dog in all circumstances, and your dog clearly understanding and respecting what is expected of him/her.

Dog Training for Obedience lays down a set of rules or boundarieswhich educates your dog to become a responsible member of society. Including how to relate to other dogs, animals and people, basic manners and how to behave in any situation.

Establishes the groundwork which assists in preventing the development of unacceptable problem behavior - such as jumping up,barking, chewing, digging etc.

The Benefits Of Dog Training For ObedienceDog training for obedience is the very best thing you can do for the relationship you enjoy with your dog, this is why:

Basic obedience training makes life simple to your dog and eliminates confusion. Your dog will know his place in the world and understand right from wrong. Dogs seem to really appreciate and thrive on this black and white view of the world.

Fun and rewarding for both you and your dog - for me, this is what its all about!

Youll have a happy, relaxed and confident dog who you can take anywhere and will be a pleasure to be around.

Greater freedom can also be extended to your dog, as hell be more trustworthy when obedience trained.

An obedience trained puppy or dog is a much safer dog. If your dog dashes out the front door you will still have voice control over him. You will be able to call on one of your obedience training commands such as "come" "down", "sit" or "go to your spot". This is very reassuring for any dog lover.

You gain trust and mutual respect with your dog. He understands what is expected of him and knows that you will always be fair and consistent with this.

When your dog is trained in obedience he will be fine around family, friends and kids under supervision.

Dog obedience training fulfills some crucial needs in your dogs lifeincluding exercise, mental stimulation, spending time with you and providing your dog with a "job".

Dog training for obedience greatly reduces the risk of being locked in a dominance struggle with your dog. Youll be his strong and always fair leader, who hell respect and look to for guidance.

Obedience training is a step by step process which you build upon over time. It creates a solid foundation for your dog to learn additional skills and training commands. Throughout this process your dog will be gaining confidence along the way.

The Danger In Not Giving
Dog Training For Obedience
Its an unfortunate reality that untrained dogs are the major cause for puppies and dogs ending up in animal shelters all over the world. This is good for nobody, especially the poor dogs.

Your dog cant ever be really close with you and your family. By this I mean that your dog wont be involved in family outings, instead spending much of his time alone in the yard. This can bring on numerous behavioral problems and can be a real pest for you, and even your neighbours.

Your dog will be more unsafe around people, other animals and on the roads.

It is a common trait for untrained dogs to challenge your leadership or authority. Obedience trained dogs will also try to test you out in this manner. But when you are proficient in obedience training youll have the tools to deal with it.

Constantly (but not effectively) your dog will be yelled at and pushed further away from his pack (you and your family). This is no way for you and your dog to live, and is totally avoidable with some simple obedience training.

General Rules For Effective
Dog Obedience TrainingYoull find proven training techniques for specific obedience commands by selecting from the list below. These are some general tips to keep in mind that hold true in any dog training for obedience situation:

Praise and reward your dog when he does what you ask of him, give anappropriate correction when he doesnt do what he has been taught to do. The key is to find the right balance for your dog.

Dont expect your dog to just know this stuff straight away. Repetition of the command and the action is crucial. Believe in what you are doing and stick to it.

Always be consistent (this includes everybody who lives with your dog), make it easy for your dog. Give him a simple decision to make and make it clear to him which choice is acceptable and which choice is unacceptable - provide instant feedback.

Never correct or punish your dog for not doing something he has notbeen properly taught to do - be realistic and fair.

Make your training sessions short, sharp and fun - for you and your dog. This is where many dog training schools fall down.

Take it slow, master one easy command to start with then move on and build upon it. Continue to mentally challenge and stimulate your dog throughout the training process.

Youre the best person to perform these tasks with your dog. Your dog has to live with you, you are his pack and you must be the person he looks to for leadership and who he respects.

Test or proof the obedience commands in different situations, places and with added distractions.

Incorporate obedience training into your daily routine - your dog could perform a "sit" before you give him his dinner, or a "down stay" when you go get the mail.

Never try to correct your dog if you dont catch him in the act of doing wrong, timing your correction is all important. A late correction only confuses your dog and doesnt make any sense to him.

Find out what motivates your dog, this will be an important tool in your training sessions. My dogs love cheese, liver treats and a throw of the ball.

Work with the natural drives and instincts of your dog - this is explained further within the articles below.

Why Does My Dog Smell So Bad

Got a dog who’s conditioned you to think that his adorable presence is worth living with despite his foul odors? If your pet smells nasty –– on occasion or full-time –– then you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

The trouble is that its not enough to know you’ve got a stinker on your hands. Its in everyones best interest to do something about the putrid problem, but that’s not doable unless you know what’s causing the stench.

To help you get to the bottom of your dogs funky smell, here are some common canine stench scenarios and causes.

Is it his skin?

If your pet’s skin smells reminiscent of rotting fruit or something freshly dug up from deep underground, it’s more than likely related to skin disease. Whether it happens year-round or seasonally, pets with skin conditions, like allergic skin disease and parasite infestations, and the secondary bacterial and yeast infections that can accompany them, can give off a serious stink.

Is it his ears?
Veterinarians file most smelly ear conditions under skin disease — its usually tied to allergic skin disease, but it can sometimes be attributed to things as bad as ear canal cancers — but simple ear smell is in a category of its own. I swear my hands will stink of ears all day if I don’t double-glove before working on them.

Is he gassy?
Many chronic gas-passers are merely exhibiting a mild intolerance to one or more ingredients in their diets. However, specific gastrointestinal conditions could be in play, so the seriously flatulent should see a veterinarian.

Is it his anal glands?

These two glands secrete some foul-smelling stuff. Lots of dogs who suffer from anal sac issues are prone to leak the liquid onto their fur, ensuring that the powerful stench follows them everywhere.

Is he a wildlife devotee?
Dogs who like to stop, drop and roll at the sight and smell of a rotting carcass or animal feces will stink long past their date with the great outdoors.

Is it his breath?
Bad breath is almost always secondary to periodontal disease. But some pets may have bad breath that arises from oral tumors or foreign bodies, stomach gases or the effects of kidney disease –– not necessarily just from bad teeth.

Is it a wet dog smell?
Does your dog spend hours in the pool? It’s not an uncommon proclivity, especially with Labs and other waterlogged breeds. The problem is that it also causes a wet dog smell that tends to linger.

Whatever the case and cause, there’s usually a solution. This may include daily bathing, a diet change, anal gland expression, frequent dental cleanings under anesthesia and even surgery for severely afflicted ears. Just rest assured that if there’s a whiff, there’s a way.

Teach Your Dog To Fetch a Toy

Training Your Dog To Fetch Is Fun

One method of teaching your dog to fetch is by using two toys. This involves two identical bouncy balls.

With one toy in your hand, play fully tempting him, then throw the toy so that the dog chases it. When he has fetched it then call him and show him that you have another toy.

Your dog then thinks you have another toy and he will race back to collect the other one. Throw the second one and then collect the first toy and start all over again.

Do this three times a day and make sure your dog is enjoying it! Remember to give lots of praise when he does what you are asking.

Dog Photography Hands Free Camera Strap

Not too long ago we posted about one of our favorite camera accessories for taking photos indoors and in low-light settings.  We also have a favorite camera accessory that we use when taking photos outdoors at the park or while on a walk.  The Black Rapid RS Sport camera strap is the PERFECT accessory that allows us to be as hands-free as possible when getting action shots of Athena.

Hands-Free Photography:

Its already hard enough to juggle Athena and all of her accessories when we go to the park or out for a walk, so a gigantic camera is not something that we also want to worry about lugging around with us.  B went on the hunt to find a hands-free camera strap that would allow us to take our camera with us on our outdoor adventures, but wouldnt weigh us down.  He found the Black Rapid RS Sport camera strap, and although you still have to use one hand to click to take a picture, its as hands-free as were going to get!

Fancy Features:

The fanciest feature of this strap is that it has a metal fastener that attaches to the bottom of the camera allowing it to essentially hang from the strap.  The first time that I tried out the strap, I was afraid to let go of the camera in fear that it would disconnect from the fastener and break into a million pieces on the  floor.  Once I finally let go, I realized just how secure the camera is on the fastener even though it really is just dangling at my side.

The strap is great for getting quick action shots of Athena, especially when shes running after her ball at the park.  When we see her silly face running towards us, we simply slide the camera up the strap and click!  Bs favorite feature of the strap are the two "stoppers" that allow him to choose where he wants the camera to hang so that its easier to freely move the camera for getting the perfect picture.  The shoulder strap is also very comfortable and has thick memory foam padding.

See it in action:

Heres a little video that I took of B demonstrating the use of the camera strap (it also shows some of Athenas best training commands in action).  As you will see, we are at the park playing ChuckIt! with Athena.  B is able to launch a ball, interact with Athena, and take a few photos all at the same time!

And here are a couple of photos that B got during the photo shoot featured in the above video:

Whats your favorite camera accessory?  How do you manage to get good action shots of your pooch?

A skinny dog was dragging around a tow chain from his neck, his skin red and hair falling out, and yet he was still walking — dazed and dehydrated, but searching for water.
The sickly dog spotted a water bottle in the hand of a man standing near a truck and cautiously, he approached the man, his eyes fixed on the water bottle.
This is how Wishbone was found.
The man holding the water bottle poured the water into the dog’s mouth. Wishbone was emaciated and covered in blood and scabs. The man couldn’t turn away from the dog and instead, put him in his truck and drove home.
A trip to the veterinarian’s office confirmed that Wishbone had sarcoptic mange, an awful skin condition that is difficult to treat. It causes the dog to scratch profusely, ripping out hair and creating open wounds.
To treat the condition, the dog has to receive “dips” often, sometimes more than once a day depending on the severity. A dip basically means the dog is bathed in a deep bath full of medicine. The treatment is time consuming and expensive.
The man with the water bottle sought help from rescues, making several calls to rescues in the Tennessee area where the dog was found. Nobody could help.
As a last resort, he reached out to a friend in Michigan who runs PupeLuv Rescue, Inc. The man offered to drive the dog to Michigan if the group could take him, and they agreed to do so.
“We were shocked at the condition of the dog that had nothing but love and kisses to give us humans,” wrote the group. “What monster could let this happen to such a beautiful soul?”
They coined the dog Wishbone, got him the veterinary care he needed to make a full recovery and even got him a very special foster home with a woman who was seeking a dog that would give her a purpose; a dog who needed more than just your average rescue.
Wishbone fit in so well at the Oakland County woman’s home that she decided to formally adopt him. Now, he’s healthy, fit and living it up with his new family
He’s even getting a little national attention.
Wishbone’s story was selected as one of ten finalists in the Purina Pro Plan “Doing More for Pets” Rescue Stories Contest. In order to win, though, he needs votes.
His story (plus a video about him) and the stories of nine other rescued pets are posted online at the Rally to Rescue website and clicking on the "Vote for your favorite rescue story!" link along the top. Voting is open through Oct. 1.
Wishbone is currently ranked number 7 out of the 10 rescue stories, so he needs lots of votes to move up to number 1!
A win for Wishbone would be a win not just for him, but for his owner and PupeLuv Rescue, Inc.
If he wins, an ambassador for the rescue group that took him in, Wishbone himself and his new owner will be awarded a trip to the National Dog Show presented by Purina in Philadelphia this November. PupeLuv Rescue, Inc. would also receive $5,000 in Purina Pro Plan brand pet food coupons.
Voting is easy. Just click here to be taken to the webpage, find Wishbone’s entry and check the box next to it.

Halloween Gone to the dogs

Is it a surprise at all that Halloween costumes for dogs seem to be as abundant these days as Halloween costumes for people? I think not.

The only thing cuter than a dog in costume is, perhaps, a really cute kid in a really cute costume.

Enjoy these photos of decked-out dogs hitting the town over the weekend to celebrate Halloween.

Most of the photos are from Howl-O-Ween, which may become an annual event in downtown Clarkston.

Adjusting a new cat to your dog

So… I apparently decided that I didn’t have enough animals, so I adopted a kitten just as well. Technically, the head of the department gave him to me for free.  He’s a white cat with orange tips on his ears and tail and brilliant blue eyes.  He’s something else entirely.

Now the key thing is: how do I get a cat to like dogs? Besides rewriting history, it’s actually rather simple.  I’ve only had my kitten since Tuesday (which is about three or so days) and most of the week, I’ve been out of my apartment.  And I mean out like… day out.  Either way, yes my kitten likes the dogs now. How did it happen?  I just gave it a bit of time and I didn’t baby the kitten when he hissed at the dogs.  I honestly encourage people to let their cats set the boundary for the dogs.  It’s far easier than anything else. The kitten can hiss and swat, and to be honest, cat’s have better weapons than dogs do.

So, I brought the kitten home and amidst all the excitement, I tried to get it to be comfortable which was the hardest thing.  The dogs were constantly trying to attack it with love and kindness combined with just trying to figure out what the thing was.

The kitten hissed and hissed and hissed and swatted and hissed even more that first day.  I couldn’t blame him, the dogs were all in his poor little face.  Titus especially, he just wanted to love him and kitty wasn’t ready.  Day two, the kitten mostly ignored Ti’s antics, all the butt licking and grooming.  And then, today, the kitten is actually enjoying it.  He starts purring when Ti grooms him (which is always).  I promise this cat will be thinking he’s a dog or something by the time he’s an adult.

What did we learn? Cats and dogs can happily coexist.  It is easier, however, to have animals that will be adults around the same weight.  It’s not good to try to have a kitten and a Labrador.  But since I have Cavalier King Charles (They max out at about 18lbs) which are already very gentle dogs and then I got the biggest kitten.  I’m not worried.  My hardest thing is getting the Cavaliers to give the kitty breathing room

Cute pic of a cute dog trick

A former coworker of mine, Andrew Dupont, shared this photo of himself and his dog Dexter on Facebook last week and I couldnt pass up the opportunity to share it with all of you.
The tongue-in-cheek caption Dupont posted with the pic said: "Having a conversation with Dexter about the way he sits around the house." Adorable.
Andrew Dupont with Dexter
Dexter is a 4-year-old Shih-Poo, a Shih Tzu and Poodle mix.
"He only sits like that when hes on the couch with me," Dupont said. "Weve taught him several tricks, including how to sit up but everywhere besides the couch he extends his hind legs.
"We thought it was really funny the first time he did it, so I rewarded him."
Now, whenever Dexter thinks his owner might have a treat or toy for him, hell sit like that.
"He will stay upright like that for about 30 seconds or so," Dupont said.
Get ready for the most adorable part: "If he starts to lose his balance, he will extend his arms like he is trying to grab onto something to brace himself."
From a behavior perspective, this is a perfect example of the positive consequences rendered from rewarding behaviors you like in your dog as they occur.
Rather than thinking about dog training from the perspective that youre going to take your dog to a class or set up defined "sessions" in which you train specific commands, think instead how any ol minute can serve up a good training opportunity.
Do you like it when your dog lies nicely by your feet? Reward it. Catch your dog doing something really adorable off the cuff? Reward it.
Give your dog positive feedback for the things he does that you like and who knows? Maybe youll end up with a photo this adorable too. And if you do, please share them with me!

Its Fit Dog Friday!

Fit Dog Friday is a blog hop hosted by my friends SlimDoggy, Peggys Pet Place, and To Dog With Love. Check out our hosts and the other bloggers in the hop (see below) for ideas, tips and inspiration for getting and keeping your pups fit and healthy.

Mom and I love to walk.  Whenever we travel, we try to find good places to walk.  Each week I will tell you about a new place to walk.

Our favorite place in the world is Key West, Florida. One of the many things we love about Key West is that you can walk almost anywhere you want to go if you stay in Old Town.

When were in Key West, Mom and I like to take our walkies early in the day when its cooler and the streets are quieter.

Morning in Key West

My new friend
There are lots of interesting things to see when taking a walk around Key West.
I wanna feed the fishies!

Fishies!!!

FISHIE

929 miles to Richmond, VA
Not sure I feel like walking that far this morning

There are lots of these wandering around Key West

Sometimes they will try to sneak up on you

Where else can you see a Kapok Tree?

or a Banyan tree this big?

Not only is Key West very walkable, its also very dog-friendly.

Most restaurants in the Keys are dog-friendly
Here I am hanging out at Geiger Key Fish Camp

A Note from Garths Mom: There are chickens everywhere in Key West, and they can sometimes startle you and your dog. Stay alert and ready to distract your dog with treats and hold on tight to his leash if he has a taste for chickens. Walking along Duval Street can be a challenge if your dog doesnt have a good "leave it" command - there are often dropped foodables to be found. I prefer walking along the side streets like Whitehead and Simonton and Greene and Caroline, and walking along the water from the Westin Marina to Mallory Square to the waterfront at the end of Greene Street.

There are poisonous toads that live in Key West called bufo toads (see Bufo Toad Poisoning).  I learned about them from my friends the Key West Collies in their post Toxic Toad.  The skin of bufo toads secretes a poisonous substance that, if untreated, will kill a dog that bites or licks them.  They come out at night and at dawn and dusk and like to be near standing water.  Its probably unlikely to see one if you stick to the sidewalks in Old Town, but Im told they can be found out near the golf course.  Before visiting a new place with your dog, research local hazards to your dogs.  Check out my guest blog post 7 Tips on Traveling With Your Dog.
