How to get your dog to stop chewing

My friend has an issue with his lab chewing things, and I figured since I was giving him tips, I might as well give you all tips, too.

My first tip for him was: get a Kong.  Kongs are invaluable things.  However, not all dogs like them.  I have two dogs, one doesn’t like the texture of it and the other is just not a big chewer.  The boy (who is the big chewer) only likes the kong when something is in it.  My girl is the same way.  She will play with the kong all day if there’s a treat or frozen yogurt or frozen peanut butter inside.  But otherwise it is tucked away somewhere mostly forgotten.  Hers has been lost for awhile because she likes to hide it from me.

The first suggestion I gave him:  Whenever he sees his puppy chewing something that he doesn’t want his puppy to chew, I said: say “No, Buddy” and then substitute the kong and then say “Good boy” to reinstate that chewing the kong is good.  It takes a few tries, but positive substitutes will make him less interested in your shoes and more interested in doing what will make you happy.  Dogs (especially labs) love to please.

The second thing I suggested was giving him something to do during the day so that  he won’t be bored.  I have made up several different types of kong-fillings.  I tend not to buy the filling from Petsmart because it just doesn’t last long enough for my babies, but I have tried to figure out what will last the longest.  I have discovered that peanut butter or yogurt last the longest for mine – preferably peanut butter.  I also will occasionally put kibble or treats mixed into the peanut butter and freeze it.  It takes them a good hour or more of active working to get all the peanut butter out and often they give up and leave some in there.  That’s the kind of work that will keep a dog’s body and mind busy and make him too tired to chew later.
