This same infamous friend (poor guy – his dogs aren’t that bad, they just need some guidance that he hasn’t thought about. I’m a stickler for that kind of stuff which is probably more my problem than his.) has a Irish setter mix that needs about a half mile walk just to use the bathroom. I’m sure other people have dogs that have issues with that type of thing. I personally have never had, my dogs honestly pee the minute they hit the grass outside.

The way I train mine to go is that they go outside and then they get a reward and then we walk. The best way to speed up the urinating process is giving the dog no other choice but to go immediately. A lot of people are scared that if they do that their dogs will pee on their floor or something but really, most dogs once trained are adamant about going outside, so that is really not a worry. It is also even less of a worry if you crate the dog again rather than let it roam the house.

For people that have this issue, this should be the first course of action to try: Take the dog outside on a leash, give it 5-10 minutes to pee in the yard, if it doesn’t go take it back inside and recrate it for thirty minutes, then try the process over again. Whenever they pee, give them a food reward and a verbal reward and practice that technique whenever you have the time.

The idea is to make roaming the house a reward, rather than something that they just get for being alive. If they know that they get free roam of the house once they have peed, they will be more likely to just go ahead and use the bathroom rather than wait around for days to just go. It should be the same thing with walks. I make my walks rewards for the dogs, something that they don’t get until after they have peed and pooped.
