I can tell you right now that one of my dogs (Puppy) is completely food motivated. She doesnt play with toys, she doesnt like playing that much, but if you pull out some cranberries or some chicken, shell do every trick she knows for you to give it to her. Ti, however, can careless about getting chicken or cranberries for treats its not true motivation. For him, motivation is playing with him or with his toys. He LOVES to play.
Now, they both know around about the same tricks, but here is an example with how I train Titus since he isnt a dog that wants a peanut butter treat and is satisfied. I ease him into whatever command it is, say were doing fetch. I will throw the toy, and he will go after it because that is what dogs do, and I will coax him into bringing it close enough for me to grab it from him and then I will play tug of war with him with the toy (I have a kong wubba camo style and it is his FAVORITE toy in the world). I will play tug of war with him, he will growl, I will rub his body and all kinds of stuff and he loves it. And then I will say Leave it, and he will let go of the toy, sit back in his paws and we will start the game all over again.
Puppy actually doesnt know how to fetch, but if I were to teach her how to fetch I would have to do it in a far more complicated way than teaching Ti. I would have to first get her to give things to me by handing her something and then asking for it back and treating her for this. Once she understands that if she brings back said toy I will give her a treat, then I can start throwing it and asking her to fetch and bring it back to me. She will understand it, but it will take longer than Titus who already understands he gets fun stuff if he returns the toy.
